Colour is very important when it comes to the perception of space. As a rule, bright colours can open up a space while dark colours make them seem smaller. Which you prefer is, of course, totally down to personal taste, but also the room in which the colour lives. It can often be nice to have a darker colour in a bedroom or living room as a way of creating a cosy, intimate atmosphere. But when it comes to a kitchen, it is often best to go bright, particularly when you are trying to make the space appear bigger.
Also consider having clearly defined circulation routes. Clear pedestrian routes allow people to easily flow through the space without having to go round key objects like the dining table. One simple way to achieve this is to see all the way through the open plan kitchen and into the garden — this helps to pull people through the space.
Some kitchen companies offer a complete design, build and installation package, meaning you won’t need to find individual tradespeople, although this is often more expensive. If you choose this option, again always get quotes from at least three different kitchen companies. Even if you’ve fallen in love with a kitchen offered by one specific company, chances are others will offer something very similar.
When it comes time to design your kitchen, look for points of departure, places where it seems natural to change materials.
