You’ll have to live with the design for years, so it’s worth spending time getting it right. Use homes magazines, architectural websites, kitchen company catalogues, design books and Pinterest to pull together a mood board of what you like. Allow yourself a few months to do this and you’ll soon see key themes emerging.
Designing a kitchen based around certain dietary considerations can be a huge plus for a client. When it comes to Judaism these dietary laws, known as kashrut, define which foods are permitted in the home and how these foods must be stored and prepared. For example kashrut adherents keep meat and dairy separate so it is crucial that a kosher kitchen be equipped and organized well to accommodate this. Among the primary concerns are storage and appliances, since duplicates of everything from dishwashers to refrigerators might be needed.
When it comes time to design your kitchen, look for points of departure, places where it seems natural to change materials.
Another advantage of an open plan kitchen is that it provides large spaces for entertaining. If you are preparing food you can still be included in the social activities. Friends can be sitting comfortably having a coffee while you are preparing nibbles and yet still part of the conversation.
