Perhaps you’re noticing a trend here – the overwhelming preference of neutral colors when painting the kitchen in 2016. The thing with neutrals is that they give you a nice ‘base’ to work with. You can always personalize the kitchen with pops of color in the lighting, sink, and décor, so a neutral allows you freedom and flexibility down the line.
One of the safest ways to add color to your kitchen is via your walls and kitchen accessories. Chalkboard walls are in style right now and they can make a great addition to a kitchen. A classic black chalkboard is one option, but there are other colors you can choose from that might work better in your particular space.
This stark look works well in contemporary spaces. As mentioned, the severity of a true white can fight a traditional decor, but in a modern space it feels appropriately crisp. It’s especially effective in small spaces, such as compact condo kitchens, paired with minimalist white cabinets to give the illusion of a bigger space.
Choosing a dark gray rather than pure black will soften the look, so it’s usually preferable to stop at charcoal in most situations.
